Cycle Oil also known as light cycle oil or LCO is the diesel range product from the FCC unit.  Fluid catalytic cracking is one of the most important processes used in petroleum refineries.  It is widely used to convert the high-boiling, high molecular weight hydrocarbon fractions of petroleum crude oils into more valuable gasoline, olefinic gases, and other products.

 

As a diesel blendstock, Light Cycle Oil is not very highly valued because of its highly aromatic content, which gives it a low cetane.  Typically, it is hydrotreated to raise its cetane and then blended into diesel.  Light Cycle Oil is a liquid residue produced in the petroleum industry when catalytic cracking is employed to convert heavy hydrocarbon fractions remaining from earlier stages of crude oil refining into more valuable lighter products.
